Brownback is scheduled to quietly sign his budget today before sneaking off on a taxpayer funded trip to the Paris Air Show. It's understandable that Gov. Brownback doesn't want to draw attention to a budget full of broken promises that cuts millions from higher education, threatens Kansans safety, and steals dollars from early childhood programs.http://www.twitpic.com/cxslgv

Now the fund’s bosses reportedly want to take a more active role in the companies where the fund is a major investor. The fund logged an overall return of 13.4 percent in 2012, broken down by 18.1 percent on its stock portfolio, 6.7 percent on its interest-bearing investments and 5.8 percent on its real estate holdings. As some Norwegian media reported, the enormous fund used to save up Norway’s oil wealth for future generations earned an average of NOK 1.2 b…http://www.twitpic.com/calxyp

The 85-year old later shaped some of the reforms contained inthe Wall Street overhaul known as Dodd-Frank after the 2008 financial meltdown. The stooped 6’7” regulator—quite literally a giant in the field—became the namesake of a rule meant to restrict the ability of government-protected banks to speculate in the markets for their own profits. So when Volcker declared on Monday that the financial regulation system is broken, it’s time to sound the alarm. The gist of his complaint i…http://www.twitpic.com/cacdne

#union #iww #ows #p2 #tlot #tcot Voting: A pain and a bother? http://www.jimhightower.com/node/7887 Two heroes emerged at the polls this year, and neither was named Barack or Mitt. Their names are Galicia and Ken – ordinary Americans with extraordinary civic spirit. While about 40 percent of eligible voters didn't bother to cast their ballots this year, these two demonstrated that our right to vote is not something to take lightly – especially at a time when Republican officials in several states are going to extremes to deny millions of citizens that right. Galicia Malone, 21 years old, was making an urgent trip to the hospital Tuesday morning, because she was about to give birth to her first child. Her water had broken and her cont…http://www.twitpic.com/bere1s

WHY AMERICA IS SEVERELY BROKEN… #p2 #ows #tcot YES YOU DO WANT TO KNOW THIS! Are Corporations and Big Banks Making a Windfall From Food Stamps? How much food stamp money are Coca-Cola, General Mills and Walmart getting? The government isn't telling. Perhaps you've heard: At a time of record need for food assistance among America's poor, the U.S. Senate is poised to cut roughly .5 billion from food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which 46 million Americans — one in seven of us — rely upon. While Congress is obsessed with saving money by cutting assistance to our poorest citizens, there's been nary a peep about how major banks and food corporations profit from food stamps, and what that means for recipients and the rest of the taxpaying public. With minimal oversight or accountability, banks such as JPMorgan Chase administer SNAP in each state, reaping big contracts that reveal little about how they turn a profit off these public benefits. You'd think the austerity-minded Congress might want to know. Consider a few facts, revealed in an in-depth report released Tuesday by California-based Eat Drink Politics (of which Michele Simon is president and Christopher Cook a contributing researcher): JPMorgan Chase holds contracts in 24 states to administer SNAP benefits, indicating concentrated power and a lack of competition; In New York, a seven-year deal originally paid JPMorgan Chase 2 million for EBT services, and was recently amended to add .3 million–an increase of 13 percent.
